24th & 25th May 2008 - North Tyne Sponsored Canoe Challenge
At the end of May, Bruce Anderson and Ged Hoburn plan to ´paddle´ the 66 miles from Kielder to the Mouth of the Tyne in a canadian canoe. Bruce is experienced in the art of canoeing but Geds only experience of ´taking to the water´ in the last thirty years has been on a pedalo in Crete!!! So it should be an interesting and exciting challenge.
To sponsor Bruce and Ged please contact Ged by email Here

Update

Update
While you were all enjoying a relaxing Bank Holiday weekend, Bruce and Ged have been out practising for the big event !!! Bruce is a ´hard task master´and the good news is that Ged has only fell in the water twice – unfortunately that was just getting into the canoe !!!
We are delighted that accomplished canoe experts Ken (a lecturer at the Sports Department at Newcastle College) and keen ´water baby´ Tom have volunteered to come along and provide support on the challenge. There is still time to sponsor Bruce and Ged by using the link above.

Update - Task Complete
This certainly was a CHALLENGE - who said it would be ´plain sailing´ !!!! The good news is that along with our back up team Tom and Ken, we completed as much of the 66 miles as humanly possible. The first section was extremely difficult due to a lack of rainfall over recent weeks, consequently the North Tyne was very shallow, with Bruce and Ged having to carry the canoe over rocks for several hundred metres at a time - it certainly was more of a challenge than we had planned.
There were also sections of the Tyne which were ´off limits´ or very dangerous. Never mind with a lot of determination against a strong North Easterly wind on the last day Bruce, Ged and Tom managed to complete as much of the challenge as humanly possible. The weather made the Tyne very dangerous with the water more suited to surfing than a Canadian canoe !!!!
A million thanks to Bruce for his dedication, endurance, skill and patience and to Tom and Ken for providing a great back up team and for their wonderful support and words of advice and encouragement. Also a big thank you to Richie for giving up his Bank holiday weekend to drive the canoes and the team around and to Keith, Lyn and Susan for their support and care.

27th May 2008 - 45 mile canoe trip around the isle of Bute.
John Watson and Stephen Cockburn from Hacel Lighting - based at the Silverlink in Wallsend, have recently contacted the Foundation and plan to complete a sponsored 45 mile canoe trip around the Isle of Bute in Scotland commencing 27th - 28th May 2008 (weather permitting). This is a brave and fantastic challenge and should take a minimum of three days.
John actually remembered Sara when our families both lived in Cambridge Avenue in Whitley Bay and his daughter Christina was a good freind of Sara´s.
To sponsor this fantastic event please contact John by email Here or contact Ged Here for further Information.
John is a member of the Northumbrian handgliding and paragliding club and hopes to receive support from the clubs members. Please click Here for details of the club.

Update - John´s Story
We completed the paddle around the isle of Bute, starting and finishing at Kerricroy bay on the East coast of the Island. The going was really hard with choppy confused seas and very strong winds. The first day saw us heading around the south of the island and calling into some beautiful bays, one particularly secluded one called Glencallum Bay was absolutely outstanding. We camped the first night at Stravannan bay on the west coast, which turned out to be a very windy exposed site, it was a real effort to pitch, cook and keep warm.

The next day we paddled up the west Kyle, it was force five gusting seven but blowing dangerously offshore, so hugging the coast as much as we could was a necessity. Once rounding the top of the western Kyle we were hit by some very strong headwind, which almost had us pinned, it didn't relent for the next twenty miles.

Both pretty exhausted, we rounded the Burnt isles at the top of the eastern Kyle where the strong tidal stream surprised us and almost had us both in the drink, we camped this night in the farmers field in front of the Colintraive hotel, a few beers went down well that night.

The paddle down the Eastern Kyle was sole destroying, a gale force headwind all the way, massive effort for little reward, At one time a man walking on the shore overtook us both. The last few miles from Rothesay bay was the most testing for us with waves breaking over us, a very confused sea with wind against tide and our faces still taking a battering by the relentless wind and spay. Several times we were caught unawares by sneaky breakers and I almost had the paddle ripped out of my hands by the wind. I must say I was pleased to get back to the car, we both agreed that if the sea had been in that state when we arrived on Bute we would have cancelled the trip.

All in all a very difficult but worthwhile event and some memorable experiences, we now have the challenge of collecting the money in, I will keep you posted on how much we actually raised for sarashopefoundation.

Update
A million thanks to John and Stephen for raising £1500 from the canoe challenge - well done!!!
