In Memory

This page is dedicated to those wonderful children and young adults who visited the Retreat and since have lost the fight against cancer.

Some families have asked that we do not publish them on this page. That does not mean we are not thinking of them and wishing them well in the sad times they are going through

We have such happy treasured memories from the week with spent with Ged, Julie, Mark and Faye back in 2012. We didnt know what to expect but felt instantly at ease and part of the family. We had the most wonderful time and so much fun. Danielle described our time in Greece as the most amazing holiday with amazing people! Which says it all really, she also said that Lake Kournas was one of her most favourite places in the world. After a year of intensive chemo and multiple operations it was just what we needed to recharge and start to enjoy life again. Sadly ours was not set to be a happy ending and our beautiful daughter Danielle Pickering passed away on 11th April 2017 at the age of 21. Danielle was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma a few weeks before her 16th Birthday in 2011. She was stronger than we could ever have imagined, she showed such courage and determination throughout her battle enduring 9 months of intensive chemotherapy,  a below knee amputation, a hip and femur replacement and 3 lung operations. Danielle loved life and never let the illness define her or stop her from doing the things she wanted to do.

She left this world a better place and gave us a beautiful Granddaughter Olivia Grace. Our hearts will be eternally broken

Abe returned to Uni after the holiday, and enjoyed a full year of Uni life. His amputation didn't hold him back! The following summer a routine Xray and appointment at The Christie showed that the cancer had spread to his lungs, and after 3 cycles of chemotherapy a scan showed that it had not had any effect on the tumours.Abe decided to make the most of the time he had left, and we had a last Christmas and New Year together. His health took a sudden turn for the worse and he passed away at home on January 9th 2015
